General Description:
The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all heating/cooling systems and boilers on campus, and for the preventative maintenance of all air intake and exhaust systems. The engineer on duty responds to calls for emergency repairs and provides access to buildings and facilities as needed. Reports to the Maintenance Lead
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Operate and maintain all heating equipment, air conditioning units, boilers, chillers, electronic and computerized control units, and related equipment on campus.
Maintain all building air intake, exhaust, and filter systems.
Provide emergency or after-hours service of fire alarm systems, fire emergency stations, and emergency lighting systems, repairing systems and resetting alarm pull-boxes as needed.
Perform minor troubleshooting on building elevators; respond to emergency calls for stuck elevators, calling elevator company for repairs when necessary.
Escort all building/equipment inspectors through buildings during annual inspections.
Respond to calls for temperature control or routine problems with heating/cooling systems.
Evaluate and/or perform emergency repairs of all types as needed.
Perform minor plumbing and electrical repair in buildings in emergency situations or as requested by the maintenance manager.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be mechanically inclined and able to perform emergency repairs in many areas.
Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ability to make decisions and work independently without close supervision.
Ability to keep daily maintenance log.

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED.
Two years work experience with heating systems. Related education can substitute for experience.
Class IV Boiler Fireman license or higher.
Enroll in Class III Boiler Fireman certification training within three months of being hired. PLU will reimburse the cost of the class and materials, once certification is obtained.
Valid Driver’s License (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2yrs).
Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, declaration regarding sexual misconduct, pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training, and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5-year Employment Abstract).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience or certification in cooling and/or control systems.
Knowledge of computer operation and technology.
Knowledge of Fire Risers and Control valves.

Work Conditions:

May often be exposed to hot, dry, dusty or sometimes to cold, wet and/or humid conditions.
Work is often around very heavy equipment with large awkward tools.
May occasionally work in high places or in an environment with a high noise level.
May be exposed to hazardous conditions; e.g. fire boxes, relief valves, hot pipes, etc.

Physical Requirements:

Required to regularly stand/walk and occasionally climb, balance, or work in cramped areas.
Must be able to bend and reach, stoop, and kneel while working in a variety of areas.
Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
